Whipped Coffee – the Dalgona Coffee Recipe

I love coffee so much, but I actually don’t drink it every morning. For me, coffee is more of an enjoyable treat or something relaxing to sip at a coffee shop while I write. But, when I saw the Dalgona coffee video on TikTok, I knew I needed this whipped coffee drink in my life!

The whipped coffee was so fluffy and creamy! It was also very strong, so read through this whole post to get my tips to make the drink taste great.

Ingredients

The ingredients for whipped coffee are pretty simple:

  • Instant coffee or espresso powder
  • Granulated sugar
  • Hot water
  • Milk and/or cream

For the coffee, I used Medaglia D’oro espresso powder. This is what I recommend over individual packets of coffee granules.

I used whole milk and I am sure this would be good with any milk you prefer. I also wanted to add extra flavor, so I mixed the milk with a couple of tablespoons of coffee creamer. This Danish butter cookie flavored creamer I found at ALDI is really delicious, so that’s what I used. It was perfect in this whipped coffee drink!

Tools

To make Whipped Coffee (AKA Dalgona Coffee Recipe), you’ll need a few simple tools:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Electric mixer
  • Coffee mug

I have seen videos of people making whipped coffee with a whisk or spoon instead of an electric mixer. Personally, I would rather use the electric mixer to save time and prevent a tendinitis flare up in my hand, but it does give you an option if you don’t have a mixer handy.

Making Whipped Coffee

To begin, mix together instant coffee, sugar, and hot water together in a mixing bow. You’ll need 2 tablespoons of each.

Now, beat the mixture on high speed with an electric mixer. At first, the coffee will be dark and syrupy thick.

After a minute of beating, I could see it begin to thicken and lighten.

After five solid minutes of whipping, I had perfect whipped coffee:

Give it a stir with a spoon to be sure it’s smooth and completely creamy.

Fill a coffee mug about halfway with the milk of your choice and some flavored cream if you prefer.

Dollop the whipped coffee on top of the milk. Step back and admire your pretty coffee creation!

How to Drink Whipped Coffee

Now you might be wondering, “how do I drink this thing?” You actually will want to stir the coffee up with a spoon before drinking. The end result is a thick, creamy, chilled coffee drink.

Possible Problem: It’s Not Sweet Enough

I’ve talked with a few people who made their Dalgona coffee with just the whipped coffee on top of plain milk and they felt the drink was bitter. It’s true that for many people, the coffee whip and milk alone is not sweet enough. This is why I add the flavored creamer to the milk; for extra flavor and sweetness.

If you choose to not use flavored creamer, be aware that you may need to add more sugar to the coffee before you drink it.

Variations

Here are some fun variation ideas for your whipped coffee:

  • Whipped Mocha – Add chocolate syrup to the milk and stir well, then scoop the whipped coffee on top. When you stir before drinking, you’ll combine the flavors to get a nice chocolate coffee drink.
  • Fun Flavors – Add coffee flavor syrups of your choice to the milk before adding the whipped coffee. Let me know what flavor combos you come up with!
  • Keto Whipped Coffee – To make this coffee sugar-free and keto friendly, follow the instructions as usual, but replace the granulated sugar with Swerve. You may need to experiment with how much to use to be sweet enough for your taste. Also, use heavy whipping cream instead of milk. You can also add some sugar-free coffee flavoring to the heavy cream.
  • Toppings – Try sprinkling the top of your coffee with grated nutmeg, cinnamon, or a dusting of cocoa powder.
  • Iced Coffee – Fill a tall glass with ice cubes, then fill 3/4 of the way full with milk and cream and top with the coffee. Serve with a straw to stir and sip.

How Much Caffeine is too Much?

Here’s the big secret about this coffee drink… it is a lot of caffeine! Depending on the instant coffee you’re using, 2 tablespoons might be the equivalent of SIX CUPS of coffee. Yowza!

If you’re worried about caffeine content, there are decaf instant coffee options. You could also cut the caffeine by using half regular and half decaf.

Another option would be to attempt this recipe using only one tablespoon of coffee granules.

My favorite thing to do is just share with a friend. In my opinion, this recipe makes plenty of whipped coffee for two cups.
